Born in Sheffield, Kerry studied Physics and then Science of Materials at Imperial College London and subsequently gained a doctorate in Physics from Royal Holloway College, University of London. This led to a career as a plasma spectroscopist in fusion energy research working mainly on the JET European project based in Oxfordshire.
