Is this Braverman’s last stand?

A reader asks why a Home Secretary deliberately using inflammatory rhetoric is allowed to stay in post.

Some newspapers claim that Whitehall civil servants were unhappy about the behaviour of the Home Secretary Suella Braverman but the truth is that it is Tories in Westminster who are flagging up the deficiencies of the inexperienced, overly ambitious minister.

As one Westminster Conservative remarked that Braverman “is not stupid, she believes she has a licence to say these things because she’s not white. But all her language does is exacerbate hatred”. A former senior minister from Boris Johnson’s government has actually gone on record as saying that Braverman was a “real racist bigot”.

The UK’s first South Asian cabinet minister, Baroness Warsi, has said Braverman is “unfit” to be Home Secretary, and claimed she turns “almost every issue into a culture race war”. If this is “deliberate she’s unfit for office and if it’s because she can’t communicate she’s still unfit for office”!

Such criticism actually reflects the widespread anger felt by many Tory MPs and peers about Braverman’s frequent use of racially charged language. Some senior Conservatives have hit out at Braverman’s “racist rhetoric”, accusing her of undermining the Tory Party for the sake of her own leadership ambitions.

With the Tories languishing in the polls, still suffering from the serial infighting resulting from disastrous prime ministerships of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, the last thing they need is another divisive attention seeker, attempting to claw her way up the slippery leadership pole!

Sincerely,
