When faced by the restrictions of being a Member of Parliament and the need to be transparent in his financial dealings, Nigel Farage resigned as MP. This appears to be an attempt to stifle investigations into why an overseas donor gave him £5mn with other funding coming from a convicted fraudster who had spent time in a US prison. The convicted fraudster has also written a book on How to Launder Money – a possibility which has also been raised about the £5mn.
Farage was seldom seen in his former Clacton constituency – he preferred to be in America sucking up to Donald Trump. Yet, Clacton desperately needed a supportive MP. It has very real problems – its neighbourhood of Jaywick is one of the most deprived areas in England.
Clacton also has high levels of economic inactivity. Not just unemployment, people are just not looking for work, due in part to an aging, retired population with long-term ill health issues. Wages are low, below the national average which in turn affects the local economy,
The increasingly elderly population places local health and social care services under intense, sustained pressure. A large number of the Clacton houses are poorly insulated and expensive to heat.
The unexplained donations from dubious sources – like a convicted fraudster – have made Farage a multi-millionaire; a multi-millionaire who then jetted in and out of a constituency marked by deprivation, poor health, and fuel-poverty housing.
Nigel Farage then starts pulling expensive stunts that waste public money on by-elections, draining away money that could be better spent on his former constituency. If he is innocent of all wrongdoing, why not wait until the parliamentary investigation is complete?
The huge donations have made Farage very conspicuous, a multi-millionaire amidst unemployment, long-term ill health, low wages, and fuel-poor housing. There is a very marked contrast between the wealth of Clacton’s former MP and many of his former constituents.
But like his idol, Donald J Trump, it seems Farage just sees politics as a way of making money!
