Throughout the pandemic the government have praised the courage and fortitude of our NHS staff. We were asked to clap to show our appreciation, which we did. But how are the government showing their appreciation? By a derisory 1% pay rise for those NHS workers who have sacrificed a whole year of their lives to keep us safe.
MPs’ pay is £81,932, as of April 2020 an increase of 25% from £65,738 in 2010.
Taking the top of Band 5 as an example, nurses pay has increased from £27,534 to £30,112, an increase of only 9% over the same period.
Is this fair?
We owe those nurses, doctors, orderlies and all those who helped us through the last year a real reward and not just a slap in the face.
