The recent National Rejoin March in London once again saw coach loads of enthusiastic Pro Europeans from all over Britain come together to march through London waving their EU flags and banners.
After the heart breaking, narrow referendum defeat of 2016 and the election of lies in 2019 and its consequences, pro Europeans can now point to how and why Brexit has failed and that despite Brexit supporters’ claims and red bus lies it has led to Britain being worse off. That’s at least forty five billion a year and 4% of GDP worse off as well as Britain’s trade and business with the EU becoming more difficult and expensive. Britain has also lost considerable international influence, educational and travel opportunities. ‘Stronger together’ was a consistent idea expressed on the march, alongside an appreciation that the setting up of the EU was essentially ‘a peace project’, as Donald Tusk, President of the European Council 2014-2019, told us.
Many marchers also recognized that changing the present government was essential to any hope of a better deal or relationship with the EU and a better Britain. Most also understood, despite their obvious passion, that the step-by-step approach promoted by the European Movement and others was maybe both pragmatic and realistic while rejoining is their obvious, ultimate goal.
This interest in being Euro friendly was also evident at the Gloucestershire University’s Fresher’s Fair this year where Cheltenham for Europe and Tewkesbury for Europe were running a stall and handing out literature supporting the European Movement while running a ‘How is Brexit going?’ survey. The results were an overwhelming vote for ‘badly.’ This generation is coming to realize what has been taken from them in terms of travel, work and friendships and they are getting angry about it.
As recent polls show, multiple thousands now understand the need to engage with the EU again on the basis of mutual trust and benefit. Brexit has failed and was always based on a false portfolio promoted mainly by duplicitous ex public schoolboys. The recent march in London, alongside a growing understanding from the young as to what has been lost demonstrates the need for Britain to return to the larger European family.
