Today, while I was going to the market,
I bought three spinach pies
from a nine-year-old boy
who sells them in front of the bakery.
On the way back, before I entered the camp,
the sound of a helicopter missile
shook the camp.
I was the first to arrive
at the targeted location.
It’s the same bakery.
Where is the boy?
Oh my God,
it’s him.
This is his sweater.
I know him.
These are his pies
lying next to his body.
The body didn’t have a head.
I would have known him
by his beautiful eyes,
soft hair,
or charming smile
but none of that was there.
I carried him to the car.
We spent half an hour
searching for his head
until someone shouted
200 metres away
that it was on top of his tent.
These words are by ‘Hussein from Gaza’, and they were originally shared on X/Twitter on 28/10/24. The boy’s name is Muhammad Al-Ustadh.
