Trump’s refusal to accept that he is a loser not only shows him to be a spoilt baby unable to accept defeat but, as Obama told CBS’s Scott Pelley, “It’s one more step in delegitimizing not just the incoming Biden administration but democracy in general.”
Trump and his allies have continued to challenge the results in court, insisting without evidence that widespread fraud and other irregularities were responsible for his electoral defeat. Cindy McCain, the widow of Senator John McCain who ran against Obama in 2008, agreed with Obama’s sentiment, saying her husband would be “very troubled” by Trump’s refusal to accept defeat.
“It’s dangerous for this to occur. It’s time that the president get on the right side of history and makes sure that our incoming president has all the things he needs to begin with his feet on the ground,”
McCain told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Thursday.
Despite winning the popular vote in 2016, Hillary Clinton conceded defeat. Trump’s tactics might be laughable and open to ridicule but the damage Trump and some of his supporters are doing is no laughing matter. Trump in exile with an agenda to undermine democratic processes to support his own ego and excite his supporters remains a dangerous prospect
We can laugh with derision but Trump’s brand of politics is not a joke.
