Compass is a home for those who want to build and be a part of a good society; one where equality, sustainability and democracy are not mere aspirations, but a living reality. It is founded on the belief that no single issue, organisation or political party can make a Good Society a reality by themselves so we have to work together to make it happen. Compass is a place where people come together to create the visions, alliances and actions to be the change we wish to see in the world.
Compass members are laying the foundations for a progressive victory at the next election.
This is a huge undertaking – but it is possible.
Making changes
In 2016 and 2017 progressive alliances disturbed the status quo in dozens of previously safe Conservative seats. The progressive majority in this country came together and chose values over tribal politics. And the Conservatives lost their majority in Parliament.
How did they do it:
- Targeted priority seats across the country.
- Organised locally, door knocked and built relationships between progressive parties.
- Tactically backed the best placed progressive candidate to win.
Compass supporters and members were at the forefront of building those alliances – contributing to wins in over 30 seats across the country.
- South West Surrey went from the 7th safest Conservative seat in the country to 151st.
- Liberal Democrat, Sarah Olney MP took the Richmond Park by-election in a landslide and unseated Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith.
This time the campaign has to be bigger. Labour can’t win the next election alone. There are 40 seats to fight for.
Labour and the Lib Dems have made an informal pact to only put party resources into seats where they’re most likely to beat the Tories in the next election.
But it’s Compass members and the local groups they lead that will turn it into action.
The 3,000 Compass members will be steering the work up and down the country.
None of this will be possible without them.
Paul Hodgkinson, LibDems Gloucestershire County Councillor says:
“I’ve attended meetings of Compass and have also built good relationships with Labour and Green parties at the County Council – we cooperate a lot there as a credible alternative voice to the Conservatives.“
“In Gloucestershire the reality is that we are in pole position to beat the Tories in Cheltenham and the new Cirencester & North Wilts proposed seat. Labour are in pole position in Stroud. The other seats are less easy to win but have us as challenger in Tewkesbury and the new Cotswolds seat.”
