In 2021, a ‘Green Wave’ washed over the City of Bristol at the local elections. The Bristol Green Party won 13 more seats on the Council becoming the joint largest party with a total of 24 seats. They tied with the previous biggest party, Bristol Labour.
With the latest by-election victory in Hotwells & Harbourside in February, the Bristol Greens are now the largest party on the Bristol City Council. Still with no overall control, it gives them certain leeway against the other parties and can offer up more scrutiny of the Mayor’s plans.
This has made people pay attention as to what may happen in a general election as this now puts the number of Green Councillors in the constituency of Bristol West to 17 out of 20.
If the boundary changes are put into effect before the next General election, it’s even more favourable. This would mean 12 out of the 14 councillors in the new Bristol Central constituency were Green.
Someone who will be pleased with these results is the Green Party’s Co-Leader, Carla Denyer, who represents Clifton Down and is standing as Bristol West/Bristol Central candidate for the Greens in the general election.
I sat down to interview her about the Green Party’s local success and the Party’s ambitions going into the next local elections.
