On the 31 December 2021, the Districts Councils of the Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire both recorded zero ‘rough sleepers’ (people sleeping on the streets) for the first time since 2013.

This achievement comes after the Liberal Democrats won control of both councils. In South Oxfordshire they formed a coalition with the Greens. During the election campaign, both parties pledged to work with partners and invest money in the wider County to help those at risk of homelessness. In May 2021 West England Bylines featured a video I made about this and other progressive laws one councillor said she would bring in.

While the rest of Oxfordshire County reports that figures of homeless people sleeping rough, have halved since 2019 , it’s encouraging to see local parties keeping to their promises to help those people at risk even more.

We’re hoping they can keep this up to help as many people as possible

If you are at risk of homelessness and live in one of these two areas, please go to one of these sites for help:

  • White Horse District
  • South Oxfordshire District

If you wish to donate money to help these projects, visit Oxfordshire Homeless Movement.

Now watch our video for an in-depth report of this major local achievement of zero rough sleepers
