West England Bylines (WEB) have formed a productive alliance with the Westbury People’s Gallery. The Gallery has produced artwork and articles for our online newspaper. WEB in return promotes the Gallery’s work and encourages readers to visit. The Gallery is in the suburban garden of curator Malcolm Atkins in Westbury Avenue in Oxford.

One example of our collaboration is that Malcolm has build a massive display board featuring WEB articles, which passers by stop and read. The second edition of this display is now ready to view and comprises an introduction to WEB and five of our recent articles:

  • A poem on “Atoms” by Richard Wain
  • Broken Britain – “Our Dysfunctional Dystopia” by Claire Jones
  • Robert Courts Watch – holding Witney MP to account by Hugo Kerr
  • Another poem by Richard Wain – “Land of Hopeless Tories” and
  •  Martin Griffiths asks can we get “A New Deal with Europe?”

Back in June Julian Greenbank made this video of the Gallery with a video interview with Malcolm.

Another project was the “Sewage Wall of Shame” which was a display of all the local Tory MPs who had voted to allow water companies to dump raw sewage into our rivers and seas. WEB followed this up with an article naming and shaming all the MPs and then produced a video of an event in Oxford where Malcolm invited participants to “Pin a Turd on the Tory”.

Malcolm has also been active in writing occasional articles for WEB on themes as varied as “Londongrad” and “Eurovision”.

I would encourage any reader who finds him/herself near Oxford to visit the Gallery at 1 Westbury Crescent, Oxford, OX4 3RZ.

Jon is a committed European. Ever since he moved to Brussels as teenager, he has lived, studied and worked in many European countries. He and his Scottish wife brought up their two daughters in Munich for ten years. What he learned from living in Europe as well as Africa and Asia is that, whilst UK does a lot of things really well, other countries do many things better. So that's why he believes we should learn from other countries especially our European neighbours. Jon loves Britain and many things British but we cannot resurrect the Empire!
